Love is many things to many people – but what is love according to the Bible?

OK – let’s start with a little musical trivia; Glenn Campbell once sang a great song about love (he was a Christian who openly shared the same troubles that the rest of us do and often wrote about it in his songs) that went: “Love is when you can share your deepest lows and highest highs – you share your side splitting moments with someone you love.” Well that my friends, is what at 101FREEChristian Singles site we want to encourage among Christians and what at least one of the loves described in the Bible (there are really four main ones) is about.

Jesus on love

Jesus said the greatest of all the loves is not a fuzzy feeling but something you do. And that something he said is the greatest love of all is charity. Why? Because charity involves having to actually give of yourself – your time (I argue our most precious asset), possessions and many other things. It is ironic then (or perhaps being done on purpose) that governments around the world are seeking to take away all we own – so we have nothing to give away and they are the only charitable givers. Surely this is not the way God intended things. He clearly gives and takes away as he pleases.

What love isn’t

So what is love not? Love is not giving people a like or thumbs up on Facebook – and definitely not saying you love them and even more definitely not just loving your friends. Jesus said amongst other things – real true love is pouring blessings and not curses or injury on your enemies! Wow – think about that for a revolutionary idea. How would the world look if we all simply served each other with goodwill and stuck to just one of the commandments – Thou Shalt Not Covet – I would argue the main cause of all wars (coveting of land, wealth and resources etc).

Many people can recount the heartbreak they have felt by getting too deeply involved with someone who doesn’t share their Christian beliefs – all the time hoping that the person would ‘change’. Granted this can happen but in the main, most relationships where one partner is a Christian believer and one isn’t fail after a lot of time and effort goes has been expended – often it’s the Christian that’s left in the worst state since with us – the world is NOT our oyster and it is practically more difficult to find real love with a real Christian as there simply aren’t so many of us around!
