Internet dating online – what was the first site?
First off if you don’t like reading – you might want to take a look at the Wikipedia page that plots the establishment of Internet companies dating. So we know who invented computerised dating – and no it wasn’t match at Harvard University in the sixties – it was a 20-something dyslexic London girl with a flare for what does – but more importantly as she discovered what doesn’t make an effective matchmaking service. So who invented the ‘dating site’?
To cut to the chase – let’s just look at part of the timeline from wikipedia here and we will see that the first Internet dating site was called Kiss.com (now just a place-holder domain owned by match.com). Here below are the timeline entries. Note two early message board or bulletin board services (see an example in the photo above) – one called Pink Chat Rooms – and another called Matchmaker Electronic PenPal – are in my view really the first Internet dating services – despite the Internet not yet existing as we know it – they use electronic person to person communication. The later ones in my humble opinion simply improved on the platform.

Services in different cities around the Toronto area are launched. A gay option is quickly added. The gay section becomes its own branded service.
